EMBRYO TRIMMING METHOD ASSISTED HATCHING / ASSISTED HATCHING (AHA, AH)

Assisted Hatching is a procedure in which the membrane around the embryo is thinned by certain methods. The aim of this procedure is to enable the embryo to attach to the lining of the uterus. The most preferred method for thinning the embryo membrane, i.e. shaving, is laser. Other than laser application, mechanical or chemical methods are also used.

The membrane around the embryo is called the pellucida. “The pellucida thickens after fertilization has taken place. When the embryo reaches the uterus, it separates from this membrane and settles in the inner layer of the uterus, the endometrium. If this membrane layer cannot be separated, the embryo cannot leave the uterus and implantation (attachment in the uterus) cannot take place.

Which methods are most preferred for thinning the embryo membrane, known as AHA, AH?

  • Laser technique
  • Pronase method
  • Mechanical techniques
  • Acid tyrode may be preferred depending on the situation

Why may embryo membrane thinning be necessary in IVF treatments?

If the outer membrane of the embryo is too thick and embryo attachment is not possible, it may be preferable to shave the embryo. Embryo trimming may be necessary in the following cases;

  • If a woman wants to become pregnant at an advanced age
  • If a biopsy of the embryo is required
  • It is used as an adjunct if ovarian capacity is deteriorating in patients
  • Embryos divide more slowly than normal
  • Embryo membrane thinning may be needed if previous IVF treatments have failed due to implantation problems.

In which cases is membrane thinning more common?

  • Embryos with thick shingles, the outer membrane.
  • Patients with FSH level higher than 10 on the third day of menstruation (patients with poor ovarian reserve)
  • Embryos that are slow to divide
  • If the expectant mother is of advanced age (more than 35 years)
  • Previous failure of the embryo to attach to the uterus (implantation)
  • Patients who will undergo embryo biopsy
