What is Sperm Freezing?<\/strong><\/p>

Sperm freezing is the process of thawing and freezing the sperm taken from the father-to-be in the laboratory to be used in IVF treatment in the future. The purpose of sperm freezing, which was discovered in the 1950s, is to use sperm cells with increased efficiency in the coming years. <\/p>

According to research, the number of babies born with Down syndrome and chromosomal abnormalities, trisomy 21 diseases has increased considerably with the advancing age of prospective fathers. Therefore, in order for male individuals to have children in the future, sperm freezing is a procedure recommended by doctors when the person is young and healthy. <\/p>

There is no specific time limit for the duration of cryopreservation of cryopreserved sperm. As long as the sperm freezing center performs the storage process correctly, the sperm cell can remain alive without time limitation. In Turkey, a prohibited period of 5 years is given for sperm and embryo freezing. It is possible to extend this period by applying to the Ministry of Health. <\/p>

Conditions under which sperm freezing can be applied: Before chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients, before the use of drugs that may cause sperm cell damage or before surgical procedures, in patients who do not have a high sperm count and may be difficult to obtain sperm in the future, men who have ejaculation problems due to spinal cord injuries after accidents.<\/p>

How is Sperm Freezing Procedure Performed?<\/strong><\/p>

1. Sperm Collection<\/strong><\/p>

For sperm freezing, a sperm sample is taken from the man. This can be done in two different ways. First, sperm can be given by masturbation in sperm collection rooms in clinics. In cases where the sperm count is not high or the patient cannot produce sperm through masturbation, the sperm sample is taken surgically. MESA, TESA, PESA procedures can be used to remove sperm from the testicle. These procedures can be performed under local or general anesthesia.
No sexual intercourse or masturbation should be performed for 3 days before sperm donation. It is wrong to prolong this period to increase the sperm count. Because if the time is prolonged, sperm motility and quality will decrease while sperm count will increase. <\/p>

2. Sperm Analysis<\/strong><\/p>

The sperm collected are analyzed before freezing. With semen analysis and blood test, sperm count, mobility, structure, diseases such as hepatitis B, HIV virus, hepatitis C are examined, and in this way, healthier sperms are selected and frozen.
According to the test results obtained, an analysis is made by looking at the quality, quantity, density, color, shape, movement speed and movement pattern of the sperm in the sperm samples given. After the analysis, the efficiency level of the sperm is checked and it is decided whether it is sufficient or not, if it is insufficient, the sample is taken again and combined with other samples. After the sperm analysis, the sperms are frozen at -197 degrees Celsius using specially formulated sperm freezing fluid. The sperms are safely preserved in liquid nitrogen for many years.
